Help build a new trail in East Montpelier!
The Mallory Brook Trail is a new hiking trail between Johnson Road and Minister Brook Road, traveling through a quiet natural area along Mallory Brook. The trailhead and (limited) parking are at the end of Johnson Road.
Volunteers from East Montpelier Trails, Inc. have been working for the past several years to create this trail; making a narrow solid tread that is inviting to follow, fits naturally into the landscape, and allows people to use the trail with minimum impact.
We are looking forward to completing the project in 2009. We figure it will take about 200 more hours of volunteer labor to finish the outstanding work. We invite you spend a weekend morning or afternoon getting to know this interesting natural area, learning trail building and maintenance skills, and creating a legacy for outdoor recreation in East Montpelier!

Greg and Zyla will be out on the trail from 9 AM to 5 PM each work day with plenty of tools and full of ideas for how people can help. Just come down the trail any time during the day to get involved. Folks are welcome to stay for as much or as little time as fits their schedule each day. There are a variety of jobs appropriate for all abilities, ages and experience levels.
In addition, we are happy to talk with folks who want to help on days other than the main work parties. For example:
If you know of a youth group or other organization that would like to work on the trail, let us know and we can set up a work date special for them.
Individuals who already have some trail building experience and want to do work on their own time, that's great too - just let us know and we can get you started on your own personal spot!
Project leaders Greg Western and Zyla Nuite are professional trail builders with extensive experience leading and teaching volunteers on the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail. We look forward to meeting you!
